Communal living always causes interesting results.
After the recording of their successful debut “Juturna”
that melded them together as a band, Circa Survive
decided that they would take this route. The result
of 2 years of touring and life afterwards is the glorious
“On Letting Go”. This could be quite possibly
the most scene attractive record this year. The songs
are gorgeous soundscapes over which vocalist Anthony
Green’s introspective lyrics and heart-provoking
singing is proudly displayed. Taking equal parts prog-rock
and emo Circa Survive has created a monster of a record
that stands head and shoulders above their contemporaries.
The albums keynote single “The Difference Between
Medicine And Poison Is In The Dose” is a jolting
pop song that led by creative guitar work noodling
through the verses leading to a soaring chorus that
features Green’s perfect high pitched voice
talking about how “I can’t be honest with
even myself”. The rest of the album follows
suit with lyrics that read like Green has placed a
gun to his own heart and told it to bear everything
close to his soul. Crazy time signatures and excellent
guitar lines that lead into catchy as can be pop choruses
are definitely Circa Survive’s calling card
on this album. Comparisons to Thrice, Coheed &
Cambria and even My Chemical Romance are easy to make,
but that’s only because they are valid.
It seems like prog-rock is determined to stand up
and take the torch from emo within the next few years.
If its being led by bands like Circa Survive we shouldn’t
be too afraid. Oh, and this album has some of the
coolest artwork I’ve seen in a while. This is
a solid record all around that shows a band that has
fully grown into themselves and their house.
