Hardcore has a strong foothold in many parts of the U.S. Areas such as New York and Los Angeles have produced some of the most inspiring and provoking names in hardcore such as Madball, Agnostic Front, Sick of It All, and Terror. Europe like the U.S. has a brutal underground hardcore scene of its own in areas ranging from the U.K. to the Netherlands. From that area, decade veterans of the scene Born From Pain renew the slam dancing we all know and love with their fifth album, Survival.
Survival is a very awesome album not only because of its raw dose of hardcore but the thought provoking political elements on it. Throughout the album, you hear recordings that mention dropping the earth’s population, biological weapons targeted at races of people, and war itself. The coolest aspect of this is that these recordings made Survival a hardcore concept album and each song on it relates to one or more of the political topics like in tracks such as “Sand of Survival,” “State of Mind,” “Final Collapse,” “Sons of a Dying World,” and “Under False Flag.”
Musically, this album hands down kicks ass. It delivers the satisfaction that aggressive hardcore groups such as Madball and Terror are known for with fast beats and some pretty brutal breakdowns. Even some short catchy guitar solos are thrown in. Last but not least, Terror’s Scott Vogel makes an appearance on the track “Zero Hour” to make sure that Survival keeps the spirit of hardcore alive and kicking in Europe.
Bottom Line: Survival is an awesome and mosh inducing album that fans of Agnostic Front, Madball, Hatebreed, Terror, and fans of hardcore new and old, will get much enjoyment from.
Key Tracks: The whole album was slammin'!!
