There Will Be Violence is the third record for Impending Doom and to say that the third time is a charm would be the understatement of the year. There Will Be Violence is an unrelenting slab of Metal that I’d be willing to bet just about anything completely slays live. It would slay live if it was half as good as it is on this disc.
Opening with the intro “Hell Breaks Loose” the band sets a Metal mood right from the get go, it’s got that slow build that gets thicker and thicker with each passing second until the inaugural proper track (“Violence”) smacks you in the face like an Immolation or Gorguts record. “Walking Through Fire” adds a little groove to the mix and features some really nice guitar work that helps the band standout from similar artists (something they weren’t really able to do on their prior releases). The blast beat sprinkled Hardcore march of “The Son Is Mine” is a definite highlight here as is the passionate “Peace Illusion,” which will have you screaming along in no time flat. The album’s final track, “Sweating Blood” is great as well. It reminds me a bit of early nineties Sepultura as a matter of fact and helps round out the sound of the album.
Overall this is a surprisingly excellent album. There Will Be Violence holds its own very well against bigger Metal labels bands and edges a lot of them out in my opinion. Impending Doom may be the band that rescues and revives and extremely stagnant and aging genre of Metal. It’s been a long time since I have truly enjoyed a Death Metal album for more than a few listens but There Will Be Violence has a spark of passion that can’t be denied.
Bottom Line: This is an excellent album from start to finish and any fan of Extreme styles of music should seek it out.
