Frank Black is easily one of America's most prolific
songwriters. Scratch that. Frank Black is easily one
of America's most prolific HIGH QUALITY songwriters.
His post-Pixies career has been a comprised of a string
of great albums filled with unique songs. Black's
ability to write a quirky song with a catchy melody
is unmatched by any of his contemporaries. This two
CD collection of Frank Black's best solo material
is evidence of why the man has such a rabid following.
What's so great about Frank Black's solo career?
Quite simply, the man is either a genius or some kind
of lunatic. Black's albums have been filled with the
rabid originality that made the Pixies great, but
covered with a pop sheen. There seems to be no formula
for a Frank Black song. Any given song may pull from
jazz, folk, punk, pop or ska. "93-03" provides
a sampling of songs that will stick in your head like
honey.
No best of collection can capture all of a fan's
favorite tracks, but "93-03" comes very
close. The punky "Los Angeles" goes hand
in hand with the genre defying "Freedom Rock".
The edgy "Men In Black" accompanies the
build-to-an-explosion classic rock opus that is "Robert
Onion". I would prefer to have seen more tracks
included from the amazing "Dog In the Sand"
and "Pistolero" albums, but that's just
one fan's view.
Despite a string of enthralling albums, Frank Black
has never received the kind of respect or commercial
success he deserves. This collection includes a disc
of live material that's a treat for those who already
own the studio albums. "93-03" is an excellent
collection for long time fans, and a great introduction
to the musical styles of a rock icon.
Key Tracks: There's no fluff on this album, but "Robert
Onion", "Headache" and "Men In
Black" are stand out songs.
