This DVD Collector’s Box set contains
tow DVDs, Under Review 1973-1980 and Magic Moments,
both previously sold separately and together spanning
nearly the band’s entire career.
Under Review 1973-1980 is part of a well done
series of critical analyses that are similar to
VH1’s Behind the Music in its approach.
This one in particular whoever comes off as pretty
bland. While it covers tremendously important
years in the band’s development, none of
the commentators really seemed to have actually
enjoyed the band’s early work and often
dismiss many of the early albums and their place
in rock history. In that respect this is a surprising
analysis. In all truthfulness though, the second
part to this DVD (which covers the band’s
eighties work through the time of Freddie Mercury’s
death) is a much more interesting watch.
The second DVD included in this special edition
set is Magic Moments. This one is an unauthorized
documentary that spans most of the band’s
career. This DVD flows much better and is overall
a better watch but it still seems kind of stale
in comparison to other releases I have seen. They
do an excellent job however of not simply focusing
in on the importance of Freddie Mercury, a refreshing
change. Queen is an important band and each member
contributed countless things to the history of
rock and roll.
This Collector’s Box set is a let down
to be honest. These are fairly weak DVDs and packaging
them together doesn’t make them any better.
Die hard fans may be interested but will probably
already know most of what is put forth here. As
for casual or new fans, these may move a little
too slowly to keep them interested.
