This two disc set is a real treat for fans
of the nine masked men from Des Moines, Iowa.
Disc one features a movie directed by the band’s
own M. Shawn Crahan (aka Clown/# 6). Not merely
a documentary, the film is a work of art rather
than your typical band DVD. It splices together
live footage, recording sessions for Vol. 3: The
Subliminal Verses, backstage shenanigans, photo
shoots, vomiting roadies, a booze chugging dude
in a shark costume, more puking roadies, crying
fans receiving autographs, girls making out, and
other various oddities, all juxtaposed with various
filmmaking techniques.
Disc two is the real gem. It includes all the
videos from Vol. 3…, including the rarely
seen yet uneventful “Vermilion Pt. 2.”
Rather than the requisite seamless live show,
nine songs are taken from various shows during
their last tour, undoubtedly some of their best
performances from the two year trek. But the highlights
of the entire set are the interviews with each
member (except Craig “133” Jones).
Each one is done sans mask, which to my knowledge
is the first time fans have seen all of them in
the flesh. It’s very exciting, yet it may
also disappoint some. The mystique is no longer,
and I’m sure this is how KISS fans must
have felt when Lick It Up was released in 1983.
Excited yet dissatisfied. But the interviews spotlight
the band up close, personal, and the most insightful
they’ve been to date.
Each member turns down the opportunity to speak
about the others directly and what each brings
to the band. Not only do they not want to offend
each other, but it seems that they’d rather
not judge their cohorts either. And that’s
really the beauty of Slipknot: the sum is much
greater than its parts, and the fact they know
this only makes them stronger.
