THE STRANGER’S SIX. Foremost in my mind, I
have a question. There are 5 members in the band.
Is the sixth one the “stranger”? Did he
fail to show up for practice so much that he was left
out? But then it appears, as evidenced by the apostrophe,
that the mysterious “six” is in the possession
of the “stranger” as it’s “The
Stranger’s Six”. So it’s his “six”,
whatever it is. Perhaps the band will be kind enough
to explain the origins of their name for me. Or perhaps
I’ll never know and it will eat away at me,
day after day, until I’m a gibbering fool, sitting
in a pool of my own urine while clutching the album
and incessantly begging the question “who IS
the STRANGER?!? And what the hell is the SIX???”
*ahem* Sorry about that. I get carried away sometimes.
Now then… an album review. Ah yes, THE STRANGER’S
SIX’s debut album for Orange Peal Records entitled
“A Date With Daylight”.
Nominated for “Best Punk Band” in 2005
and 2006 by the San Diego Music Awards, these So-Cal
boys have been creating quite a stir, both at home,
receiving a good deal of airtime on local rock radio,
as well as being featured on MTV2/Freedom Zone’s
“On The Rise” program. Suffice it to say
there’s plenty of hype going around about this
band. So what’s the deal? Is “A Date With
Daylight” any good? Let me tell you something:
this album rockets straight past ‘good’
and goes straight to ‘man-this-is-friggan-awesome’.
“A Date With Daylight” can be described
as hard rock meets punk in a head on collision of
ass kicking proportions. A heady brew of infectious
riffs, killer hooks, and raw energy, the album is
smooth as pop, and rough as rock with a definitive
punk edge. Its like a brick wrapped in silk and thrown
through a window: sophisticated and stylish, yet sinister
and forceful. Frontman Aaron Thompson claims “We
are the perfect blend of Sleaze and Class ".
They’re also a flawless union of slick polished
pop songwriting, dirty hard rock grit, and punk attitude.
Just take a listen to the first track off the album,
“Back To The Start”, which is one of the
greatest songs I’ve ever been fortunate enough
to hear. You’ll be hooked. Guaranteed.
Bottom Line: THE STRANGER’S SIX are poised
to become the poster-boys for a new breed of modern
punk-rock. I for one and jumping on the band-wagon
right here and now.
