MACHINEHEAD’S "The Blackening" is their sixth release and for anyone that questioned any efforts in the past by the band, this album will simply eliminate any negativity. “The Blackening” is by far the band's best album since its 1994 debut, "Burn My Eyes." Many have already named it a top album of 2007, and are beginning to see the work as a focal point other artists will concentrate on modeling.
The record is merciless. The work ethic is present with each song seeming to be meticulously built, taken apart, and rebuilt like fine archetecture. The song length is amazing- 4 songs comprise 40 minutes of music with the listener being carried into a aphotic world transformed through lyrics and ferocious music. The group seemed to straighten themselves out to critics and fans with their fifth release“Through The Ashes of The Empire,” but this was needed to assure their audience they woudn’t once again stray into mainstream commercial appeal, foregoing metals beauty.
“Clenching the Fists of Dissent" will journey the listener from a docile yet educated intro into a plethora of changes and turns supported by excellent guitar work and Rob Flynn production standards unmet by the comeptition. This music is so crankable it is frightening. There is a sadness to the work that will be relatable, and a harshness that is unforgettable.
“Aesthetics of Hate,” is important work that will be talked about for years to come- centering around Dimebag’s death and the media frenzy that surrounded it.
This is a must and part of a 2007 that is really shaping up to be a collectors year. Add it you’ll be quite pleased.
